Costa de Oro Winery

2005 Estate Pinot Noir, Gold Coast Vineyard
(Santa Maria Valley)

Before winemaker Gary Burk gave up the career ghost and became a vintner, he pursued his original calling as a musician in L.A. I’ve heard him play and he can still wield a pretty mean Fender Stratocaster. According to Gary, music and wine share a lot of similarities; “both rely on a blending of technique, artistry and feel,” he says.

His 2005 Pinot Noir, from his own estate Santa Maria vineyard, shows great balance: that’s the thing that should be emphasized right up front.

It’s moderately bodied and not over extracted; it’s not too hard core but not too dainty either. Truly accessible and delicious right now, it’s broadcasting flavors of beet root, cola nut and dark plums, that plum(b) the depths, so to speak, of its heart of darkness complexity. No need to wait on this one: everything is already built in to rock ‘n roll your palate right now.

Dennis Schaefer

Dennis Schaefer has been tasting and writing about wine for over 30 years, propelled by a continuing curiosity and burgeoning enthusiasm for discovering what’s in the bottle. Blessed with catholic tastes, he enjoys everything from the obvious to the sublime. A major requirement is that the vineyard, winery and winemaker consistently perform well and fulfill their potential. Balance, concentration and complexity are key to the tasting experience but, in the end, the purpose of wine is simply to give pleasure.
