Winterhawk Wines
2008 Tempranillo(Calaveras County)
The Sierra Foothills has been an active wine region since the 1800’s but in the last 20 years has come of age. Exploration of sites and varietals has lead to plantings across the region, particularly in the 1,500 to 3,000 foot elevation range. Winterhawk has sourced this Tempranillo from vineyards in Calaveras County and the mountain expression of this Spanish grape is worthy of the Rioja’s from it’s native land. Perfumed aromatics fill the glass with a hint of freshly split cedar. The wine is structured as might be expected yet assertive tannins do not overcome the underlying bright red fruit. Acidity well balances these tannins to support a juicy mouth feel and support a spicy finish. Pair with red meats, hearty stews or pasta dishes.
