Miraflores Winery 2004 Zinfandel (El Dorado County)

Miraflores Winery

2004 Zinfandel
(El Dorado County)

Despite its long history of grape growing, the Sierra Foothill’s El Dorado County remains relatively unknown to many wine enthusiasts – which means those who discover it benefit from great wine finds like this. Situated just outside of Tahoe, the growers of El Dorado are adventurous in their varietal choices, growing everything from Barbera to Viognier and even traditional Port varieties. Amidst the growing crowd however, Zinfandel still remains King in Gold Rush country.

The first impression of the 2004 Zinfandel from Miraflores was much like the effect of opening a spice cabinet. A mélange of baking spice aromas rushed out of the glass to complement dark cherry and cream components, with definite chili powder and cumin notes emerging later. Initially, there was a distinct capsaicin quality on the palate from the vibrant acidity of the fruit; followed quickly by vanilla oak and a truly decadent dark chocolate finish. Even at 15.3 percent alcohol, this Zin from the El Dorado did not exhibit the corpulence of most hot-weather Zins. Enjoy it with flavorful Middle Eastern or Italian cuisine, this wine can handle it. (And don’t forget the candles; this wine has a sultry quality about it.) At just $20, this is definitely a wine worth seeking out.
