2006 Viognier, Estate Grown(Paso Robles)
One of Paso Robles most energetic newer wineries, Cass Vineyard and Winery has everything going for it: a spacious tasting room, ample outdoor seating, a café that serves special dishes to complement the wines and, not least important, a very decent wine selection. The scenery is also quite fetching, and if you are equinely inclined, you may take a tour of the estate vineyards on horseback: preferably before you’ve tasted through the lineup at the tasting bar.
Not to be missed is this Viognier, a fine example of a warm climate edition of this varietal. In the glass, it’s bright and light, very pretty and displays none of the telltale golden hues that bespeak a flabby overripe blob. Thankfully, it was fermented and aged entirely in stainless: Viognier needs no wood. The aromas are peachy, floral and inviting: the flavors run from nectarines and apricots to ripe pears, with pineapple and tropical notes on the finish. An ideal summertime wine for sipping out under a massive oak tree while toasting the warm, but not hot, summer sun.
