Ironstone Vineyards
2006 Sauvignon Blanc(Lodi)
Bright, pale straw, and moderately viscous, this medium-bodied wine is clean and fresh with aromas of peach, lime, gooseberry, hay, and lightly toasted almond. On the palate it is clean and zesty with Meyer lemon, lime, kiwi, guava and peach notes, which continue on to the long, lively, tropical finish. This is the kind of uncomplicated wine to enjoy with friends and family as an aperitif with giant, meaty Cerignola olives from Puglia, lightly smoked almonds, and California Cotija and Mozzarella cheese and bean dip, or, with a main course of garlic-fried chicken.
Ironstone Vineyards is located in Murphys, in the Calaveras County AVA. Owner John Kautz, who started his career in agriculture as a row crop farmer in Lodi, owns prime vineyard land throughout the Sierra Foothills, but smartly invested in Lodi, too, long before it was regarded as a premium grape growing area. John and his wife Gail launched Kautz wines in 1988, and broke ground in 1989 on what was to become Ironstone Vineyards. Their four children are active in the business today, working alongside winemaker Steve Millier.
