2005 Pride of Cucamonga Grenache Noir, Estate(Cucamonga Valley)
Not everyone is knocking down the doors for Grenache, a variety that unfortunately is still considered a workhorse grape here in California. In the south of France, the grape provides a rich, silky, strawberry-imbued base to most Cote du Rhone’s, whose prices are as low as jug and box versions here as the variety provides a bounteous crop. In a few parts of the world, such as in the Priorato and Rioja DO’s of Spain, and in Australia’s Barossa Valley, the grape is transformed into a wine of amazing depth and personality.
This release, a first from brothers Joseph “J.P.” and Gino Filippi, is an interesting wine to try in general, but those organizing varietal flights in order to gain a mastery of the subject would be remiss not to include it in the line up. From the Hofer Ranch, the wine is dry, full bodied, softly oaky and fairly alcoholic. It has notes of sandalwood, vanilla extract, molasses, peach and guava nectar, apricot puree, white peach, apple juice, and, finally, strawberry. This would be delicious with grilled salmon, fried chicken, or mushroom tortellini with a cream sauce.
