Silver Stone Wines
2004 Pinot Noir, Cedar Lane Vineyard(Arroyo Seco)
Silver Stone owner/winemaker Dan Kleck knows a thing or two about Monterey: After starting his career on Long Island, he went to work in Monterey in the 1990s as the winemaker for Carmel Road, part of the Artisans & Estates portfolio owned by Jess Jackson (of Kendall-Jackson) and his family.
Kleck founded his own label, Silver Stone, in 1997. The brand, based in Paso Robles, is devoted primarily to Central Coast wines – including this Pinot Noir, sourced from mature plantings in the Cedar Lane Vineyard of Arroyo Seco. The vineyard is in a cool location and has well-drained soils littered with cobblestones. Kleck selected three clones of Pinot to include in the wine: Dijon clones 115 and 667, along with Pommard.
The wine was aged in French oak barrels, 45 percent of which were new, and the oak integrated beautifully into this supple, easy-to-drink wine. It displays plenty of bright cherry and raspberry fruit, along with tasty notes of vanilla and spice. At $33, it would pair beautifully with roast chicken or a nice slab of grilled salmon.

The ReviewerLaurie Daniel, wine columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, has been reviewing wine for more than 10 years. She doesn’t use numbers, preferring to describe her recommended wines and let consumers decide for themselves. Laurie believes that bigger isn’t necessarily better; she’s partial to wines of balance, finesse and character. Her particular interests are Pinot Noir (versions that really taste like Pinot, that is) and aromatic whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. |
