Hanzell Vineyards, located in Sonoma Valley, is a private estate winery and vineyard founded in 1957 by Ambassador J.D. Zellerbach. The Zellerbachs planted 2 acres of Chardonnay and 4 acres of Pinot Noir in 1953 -- now the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in America. They named their winery Hanzell, a contraction of Mrs. Hana Zellerbach's name, and embarked on what would become recognized as one of California's most enduring and historically important wine estates.

Visiting the Winery

Guests are received by appointment only.
To schedule an appointment, please contact us at 707.996.3860 Monday through Friday or e-mail us at: guests@hanzell.com. Saturday and Sunday appointments must be made in advance.

We offer two levels of visits to introduce our guests to the Hanzell Estate:
  • Heritage Winery and Estate Vineyards
Hosted by an Estate Educator, we lead you through the original Ambassador’s 1953 Vineyard, the 1976 de Brye Vineyard and the recently planted 2001 Ramos Vineyard. A discussion of our Grand Cru farming practices and the contribution terroir makes to our wine quality is followed by a walk through the historic Heritage Winery building, new state-of-the-art winemaking facility and barrel-aging cave. A seated tasting of the current release of Hanzell Vineyards Chardonnay and Pinot Noir conclude the visit.
    Appointments are available at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
$45 PER PERSON. PLEASE ALLOW 90 MINUTES.

  • Hanzell Vineyards Wine Library
This unique experience includes all that is detailed above plus a seated tasting in which our Estate Educator opens rare vintages from our Wine Library. Four wines will be tasted: the current release Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and one bottle of each varietal from selected vintages of at least a decade earlier. This visit provides the best experience Hanzell offers: Ambassador's 1953 Vineyard, the Heritage Winery, our barrel-aging cave and the profound pleasure of tasting well-cellared Hanzell wines.
$150 PER PERSON. $600 MINIMUM. PLEASE ALLOW 2.5 HOURS.

  • Cheese Pairing with Hanzell Vineyards Wines—Additional $20 per person
(24 hour cancellation policy applies to all tours and tastings)
