Chateau Montelena |
Chateau Montelena’s history in Napa Valley dates to January of 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs purchased 254 acres of rugged land north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. Winemaking at the Chateau came to an end with prohibition. The renaissance of Chateau Montelena Winery and Estate vineyard occurred under the leadership of James Barrett, when in 1972 wines were made for his first vintage. In 1976 Chateau Montelena stunned the wine industry, putting California at the forefront of the wine world at the grand tasting at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris, known as the Paris Tasting of 1976. There, four white Burgundies were tasted against six California Chardonnays. When the scores were tallied, Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay rated above all other wines. Today Chateau Montelena produces exceptional Chardonnay, as well as Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.
