Pontchartrain Vineyards: winery information

Winemaker: John V. Seago

Mr. Seago is a former practicing lawyer who began planting wine grapes experimentally in Louisiana in 1978 before starting Pontchartrain Vineyards in 1991. He has attended a number of short courses in viticulture and enology at UC Davis as well as regular professional industry meetings and conferences. He has participated in seminar panels concerning his experiences growing and making wine from Pierce's disease resistant/tolerant cultivars, most recently in Texas. He was mentored by Roseworthy graduate winemaker, Simon P. Thistlewood, who worked at Pontchartrain Vineyards for 1 ½ years in the mid 1990's before returning to his native Australia where he is a winemaker in the Hunter Valley.

Annual Production: 2,500 cases

Estate Vineyard Acreage
Total of 13 producing acres with an additional 5 acres planned. 7.5 acres are planted to the Euro-American cross, Blanc Du Bois, developed in the state of Florida and released in the late 1980's. 5.5 acres are planted to Norton/Cynthiana.
