Joseph Jewel Wines: winery information

Winemaker: Micah Joseph Wirth

Micah Joseph Wirth,Winemaker I was fortunate to be taken under the wing of my father Chris Wirth and Pinot Noir great Gary Farrell, one of the most respected and highly qualified small production Pinot Noir wine men in Russian River Valley. He afforded me, among other things, the rare opportunity of being able to purchase Pinot Noir grapes from the Russian River Valley, which launched Joseph Jewell Wines and got my own dreams off the ground. Up and coming young winemaker, Micah Joseph Wirth, is the fourth generation in a family of wine pioneers. Raised in Alexander Valley, Micah was destined for the wine business. His interest in wines began early while accompanying his father to work at Preston Vineyards at the age of 8 years old. Micah learned winemaking hands-on and on the ground floor in the cellars and labs of ElvenGlade and Raptor Ridge Winery in Oregon where his father Christopher Wirth was winemaker. Shortly after working with his father, Micah attended classes at UC Davis and Santa Rosa Junior college in Enology. In 2004 after spending one harvest working at Chalk Hill Winery, the 14 to 16 hour shifts couldn’t extinguish Micah’s enthusiasm for his new found winemaking career - it was love. Most recently Micah has spent his time at Gary Farrell. It was here that he was guided and mentored by two of Sonoma County’s great winemakers, Gary Farrell and Susan Reed. In the spring of 2006 Micah realized a lifetime dream of producing his own wines and was also fortunate enough to share this dream with his friend and business partner Adrian Jewell Manspeaker. Together the young duo, led by intuition and drive were determined to create an artisan style of wines that they themselves enjoy drinking. In October of 2006, they crushed their first fruit, and so the story of Joseph Jewell began.
