2006 Albariño, Ibarra-Young Vineyard(Santa Ynez Valley)
Albarino was winemaker Louisa Sawyer Lindquist’s first love and, when she looked around the California viticultural landscape, she was amazed that little Albarino was planted. What with all the Spanish place names, the Missions and the architecture, it seemed like a natural to her that Albarino along with other Spanish varietals would have a place there. So she helped jump start the process, planting Albarino in Santa Ynez Valley (a warm Region II), where it would get good heat during the day and cooling ocean breezes at night, with very little chance for rain (unlike Rias Baixas).
The 2006 Albarino is Lindquist's seventh vintage and her pioneering experience is really paying off. It is full of fragrant, floral, fresh and zesty aromatics, that include orange blossom, lemon and fig.The flavors are seemingly more subtle and refined this year with green apple, green melon, citrus and bitter almond all making an appearance at various points. The nice sweep of salinity, minerality, and racy acidity that hits on the finish is still there, a familiar signature of Lindquist's lush but refreshing style.
