Wine:Dog Tail Vineyards 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (California)

Dog Tail Vineyards

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
(California)

Dog Tail is the latest endeavor of The Kautz Family, owners of Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, Calaveras County. According to the winery, this new brand was developed as a line of fun, quality wines that would be appealing to new and existing wine consumers. All the wines carry the California appellation designation and are around the $10 price point. The label also honors the many family dogs that roam the vineyards. Some of the wines are single varietals, others are blends, and all of them and are great for everyday consumption. The screwcap makes it easy to reseal and save any leftovers for the next day.

Bright vivid purple in color, the 2005 Dog Tail Cabernet has aromas of cranberry, cassis, raisin, date, fig, prune, plum and wet earth. On the palate it is clean with a tutti-frutti first impression followed by baked fruits hinting at a rather warm origin. This is a straightforward wine -- very soft, round, and pleasantly plump. It is very easy to enjoy and has a long, flavorful, plummy finish.
