Varietal Character

Saint Macarie
Saint Macarie
It is tough to define the character of Saint Macarie as it has become so rare to find. Lost in it's home of Bordeaux, a few vines can be found in a repository of varietals in Southwest France. Produced by one known winery in Australia and hidden in the vineyards of Guenoc/Langtry Estate of California, the elusive nature of Saint Macarie begs a new beginning.

Saint Macarie Grape Details

One of the, considered, lost Bordeaux varietals, Saint Macarie is truly and obscure red grape. The origins come from the Aquitaine, a region in the department of Gironde. It is still listed as a Bordeaux varietal but has likely vanished from the region.

While this is a loss to Bordeaux wines of this grape can still be found, now coming from small blocks and inprobable winemaker in Austrailia and California. One such planting does exist in the Guenoc Valley AVA of Lake County, on the 23,000 acre Langtry Estate. Previous owner Orville Magoon loved to experiment and this varietal exists amoung the vineyards. It is not known to produce a labeled varietal wine at this time but things can change.

In Australia both LoxtonMedia Estate and Westend Estate Wines produce red wines from this forlorn varietal.
