Poetic Cellars 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (San Francisco Bay)

Poetic Cellars

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
(San Francisco Bay)

Although winemaker Katy Lovell just did her first crush at her new winery property in Soquel this past fall, she is no stranger to the wine business. She and ex-partner Max Rios built Rios-Lovell Winery and planted significant acreage in Livermore back in the early 90s. She has always produced award-winning wines, and the wines under her two new labels, Poetic Cellars and Lovell Creek, are no exceptions.

This is a well-made Cabernet with very Livermore-typical characteristics that lean more towards black fruits than to cigar and leather. This is Wente fruit, a blend of 52 percent clone 4 and 48 percent clone 337. Aromas of dark chocolate and coffee meld with damp earth, molasses and cinnamon. It’s well-structured, plush, and filled with cassis, coffee, dried cherries, blackberry brandy, truffles and baked plum. It’s very easy to appreciate, with good acidity and well-rounded tannins.

A wine writer and wine judge for major publications and competitions around the country, Laura Ness likens wine to the experience of music. She is always looking for that ubiquitous marriage of rhythm, melody, and flawless execution. What is good music? You know it when you get lost in it. What is good wine? It is music in your mouth.
