2006 “Lady Grace” Verdelho(Lodi)
From the Portuguese island of Madeira, Verdelho is widely planted in Australia, and is increasingly gaining popularity in the US. Producer Burford and Brown is the bottle-child of winemaker Peter Burford, who hails from Australia, and has made wine throughout the world. The winery claims the distinction of being the largest producer of Verdelho in the United States.
Dedicated to his mother Grace Pauline Burford, this Verdelho may look like a very thin, crisp Pinot Grigio in the glass, but its pale, wan appearance belies it’s amazing olfactory and palate-pleasing powers. It’s a complex wine in the nose and in the mouth, tingling every nose hair with bright gooseberry, honeysuckle, nectarine and lime aromas, then spreading them in a delicate swathe across your mouth. At first citrusy, bright and light, then intensely pluot with hints of apricot, the wine finishes with fleshy peach, flinty minerality, and even melon. It never stops finding new spots in your taste buds to wake up and tingle. A very delightful fruit salad of a wine, with a very dry sense of humor. Mabe a lot like Peter’s mother?
